Mixing is the process of combining individual recorded tracks, vocals, instruments, and effects, into a cohesive song. On the technical side, this involves adjusting volume levels, panning sounds across the stereo or immersive audio field, applying EQ and compression, and adding effects like reverb or delay to enhance the overall sound.
But mixing is equally a creative endeavor. A mixing engineer's primary role is to translate the artist's vision into reality. The technical tools, faders, plugins, processors, are simply the means to achieve that creative vision. In this sense, the mixing engineer acts as an intermediary between the artist's imagination and the final sonic product.
Of course, legendary engineers like Serban Ghenea, Manny Marroquin, Andy Wallace and many others have developed their own signature sounds and approaches. But ultimately, the goal remains the same: to collaborate with the artist and bring their vision to life in the most compelling way possible.
